Heenan, Morrissey took only 11 rounds to retain his title. He earned $2,500 for his efforts and decided to retire as world champion and devote his talents to business and politics. In between the championship bouts, one of Morrissey’s opponents was murdered. Morrissey was arrested on suspicion of murder, but eventually released. Aware of Morrissey’s criminal background, Captain Isaiah Rynders, a rising Tammany leader of dubious background, saw the potential value of 10 AL CAPONE the former prize-fighter.
