The numbers grew. The east half down stairs had held up the wreckage from above and most of the pupils there got out, many bleeding. Up the brick pile on the south some more men were digging children from under the brick on the second story floor. Most of them at the start were able to climb down assisted by two men each, a few had to be carried. Then a dead pupil, two, three, four. Police Chief, Joe Boston, found his little daughter, dead. She was Evelyn, eight years old. In 1992 Murphysboro resident Wilma Theiss Kimmel furnished a moving description of the aftershock of the Tri-State Tornado: “My brother Jack was a 6th grade pupil at Logan school, two blocks away on 15th Street, where we attended school, including Mama in the 1890s.

Murphysboro needed a relief agenda and a committee to ensure the agenda was executed properly. Governor Len Small was in the city viewing storm damage. During the meeting, with a trembling voice and tears welled up in his eyes, he pledged the resources of the State. 33 When the tornado blew through, Isaac Levy was pleading a case in the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro, south of Murphysboro, a location not far from where Abraham Lincoln debated Stephen A. Douglas in the 1858 US Senate election.

4 Murphysboro’s leveled residential areas, totaling twelve hundred buildings, would not be completely repaired or repopulated until the end of World War II, two decades later. The tornado twisted out of usefulness machines of steel bolted to the floor and flattened the M&O Railroad locomotive repair yard, roundhouse, and car manufacturing center, one block east of Longfellow grade school.
